Armin Van Buuren DJ Nº1 of the World

Armin van Buuren (born 25 December 1976) is a trance producer and DJ. He was born in Leiden, Netherlands, but grew up in Koudekerk aan den Rijn. In 2007 and 2008, he was voted number one DJ in DJ Mag's annual Top 100 vote.

Armin van Buuren pursued his career as a professional musician despite the promise of a career in law in his native country, where he completed his law degree in 2004. Armin started working as a DJ in a local night club called Nexus, finished high school in 1995 and went on to university to study law. Meanwhile, he moved his studio equipment from his bedroom to a 'real' studio. The first tracks he produced in his new studio were, among others, tracks like "Touch Me" and "Communication".Armin van Buuren has been quoted as saying, "Don't be a prisoner of your own style."He has described his musical style as "liberating, euphoric, uplifting, melodic and energetic."
He hosts a weekly radio show A State of Trance, which mostly consist of trance and other genres. The show completed its 350th episode in May 2008, running for over 7 years. In October 2002, van Buuren was voted Number 5 in the DJ Magazine 100 top DJs. The following year, he jumped up to the #3 spot, and held 3rd place for the next 3 years. His work left him at the #2 spot, just below Paul van Dyk in the 2006 polls, and in 2007 Armin reached Number 1, heading the 2007 DJ Mag Top 100. He was voted number 1 again in 2008.

As a producer Van Buuren has always had his own studio and works alone the majority of the time. He has never employed an engineer, claiming he does not want the music to be altered by anyone.

Since 1995, van Buuren has released many tracks on different labels with increasing success. His first big success was "Blue Fear" which was on Cyber Records at the age of 19. This 'Euro Trance blueprint' made it into the UK Chart. "Communication" was released on the same label, and had a huge impact on Ibiza, Spain in the summer of 1999. After being signed to AM PM Records, this track entered the UK Chart at #18 in 2000. As of September 29, 2008, Armin has won the DJ Award for "Best Trance DJ" at Ibiza along with other nominees that of Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk.

In the beginning of 1999, van Buuren started his label Armind together with United Recordings. The first release, Gig - "One", was well received. The second release "Touch Me", under the name Rising Star was signed to Ministry Of Sound in the UK, before the record was released.

By the time of his third release, Gimmick - "Free" was signed to R&S Records, van Buuren had managed to make his label popular very quickly. Under the surname Gaia he released "4 Elements" on Captivating Sounds, a sub-label of Warner Brothers. Teaming up with DJ Tiësto, two new projects were born: Major League - "Wonder Where You Are?" was released on Black Hole Recordings and Alibi - "Eternity" was released on Armind. "Eternity" received club and chart success and was signed to Paul van Dyk's imprint Vandit Records. Another major collaboration followed this. Together with Ferry Corsten, van Buuren recorded a riff-classic titled "Exhale" for the System F. album. Released as a single, this track reached gold status in less than a month.

In 2000, van Buuren started his own AVB compilation series. He managed to find a balance between progressive, techno and trance music styles. AVB001 - "A State of Trance" (not to be confused with his weekly ASOT radio shows) sold more than 10,000 copies and contains van Buuren's well known remix of Moogwai - "Viola." AVB002 "Basic Instinct" featured a new track: Perpetuous Dreamer - "The Sound Of Goodbye". This track entered the Dutch charts in June 2001 at number 26. Later in the year the track hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. AVB003 - "In Motion" was released 6 August 2001. This album contained the real trance sound and was very popular in the US. AVB004 - "Transparence" followed in 2002.

In March 2001, van Buuren started his own radio show on ID&T Radio. In this weekly two-hour show, entitled 'A State of Trance', he plays the latest popular trance music tracks. His show and the artists he features are popularized by publishing the artists and track titles on his website. This radio-show/website combination has proven popular internationally. When ID&T Radio changed genres in 2004, van Buuren left and took A State of Trance with him. The show then moved to Fresh FM, a Dutch radio station. It is now a weekly feature on SLAM!FM, another Dutch radio station, DI.FM, an online radio station, and on XM Satellite Radio channel 82 in the United States and Canada. A complete list of stations that broadcast ASOT can be found at the ASOT section of Armin's website. Also in 2004, van Buuren remixed the 24 Theme into a trance hit. In June 2005, the 200th episode was celebrated in Amsterdam and subsequently aired on radio. The 250th (8 hour) anniversary episode was celebrated in Club Asta in The Hague, The Netherlands, featuring van Buuren, Jonas Steur, M.I.K.E., John Askew, Rank 1 and Menno De Jong.

On 17 May 2007, van Buuren began broadcasting the first of a two part series of what would become his 300th episode of A State of Trance.

He has also worked on remix projects involving tracks by Japanese superstar Ayumi Hamasaki.

Van Buuren began his DJ career at club Nexus in Leiden, where he learned to play long DJ sets, which were regularly six to seven hours per set.^[2] During school holidays he played more than four times a week. In 1999, he met Dave Lewis who introduced him as a DJ in England and the United States.^[2] His DJ career accelerated, entering the DJ magazine Top-100 in November 2001 at Number 27.^[2] He has played in more than 25 different countries and can often be found on the main stage at big summer festivals. Van Buuren played a record-breaking nine-hour set for Dancetheater in The Hague (Holland). In the United Kingdom he performs regularly at Passion (resident 2002), Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Slinky, Peach and Golden.

In 2002 he had a residency at Glow in Washington D.C.,^[2] and he has played in Houston, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Atlanta, Austin, Denver, New York City, Los Angeles, Istanbul, St. Louis and Seattle. He has also regularly appeared at Amnesia on the island of Ibiza.In 2005 Armin visited his distant relative Michael Masoomi, whose father was close friends with his father. They were seen out in London and was alleged that both were spotted in 'Icon' talking to a whole host of minor celebrities and musicians.

On 11 November 2006, he had a live performance called Armin Only in Ahoy Rotterdam for the second time (after 12 Nov 2005) with a 9 hour solo set, where he performed to over 11,000 fans.
In the summer of 2007, van Buuren recorded and released a live set at Amnesia, Ibiza. "Universal Religion Chapter 3, Live from Amnesia at Ibiza" was released on 28 September 2007 as a mix compilation on Armada Records and in the US as "Universal Religion 2008" on Ultra Records on December 4, 2007.

On 12 January 2008, van Buuren was given the “Buma Cultuur Pop Award”, the most prestigious Dutch music award.

19 April 2008 saw the 3rd edition of Armin Only, this time in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht Holland. The event was attended by 16,000 fans and (partly) broadcast live on Dutch National TV. During the second half of 2008 van Buuren took this show abroad, with visits to Australia, Romania, Poland, Belgium, and a special New Years Eve 2008 show at Together As One in Los Angeles, USA.

Steve Mac, AKA (formerly) one half of the Rhythm Masters began his career as a scratch hip-hop DJ at the age of 11 – where he spent as many hours a day he could practicing, and ultimately left school early because of his obsession with perfecting the vinyl ‘scratching’ skill and also the studio. He was first inspired by the likes of Marly Marl, Dr Dre, Grandmaster Flash and Jazzy Jeff and many other Hip-Hop DJs and initially started ‘messing around’ making Hip-Hop records. Steve’s Foray into house music first began with Rob Chetcuti in 1990, in Malta. Both in a local Hip-hop group, they spotted what they describe as each other’s ‘formulating talent’, and formed the production/DJ duo: The Rhythm Masters – Steve, bringing his acquired skills from his Hip-Hop past into house music.

After three years of studio work, Steve, (along with Rob) moved back to England and spent much of the first half of the 90’s absorbing the house scene - particularly the garage sounds of the US, where his long-term fascination with Todd Terry and the US sound began. The sounds from this time can be heard subliminally through every Rhythm Masters track – especially from their album Disconnect Your Head with tracks like The Ghetto and Underground (feat. The vocals of Diane Charlemagne) on Black and Blue. And, amongst others, 22 releases on their own label – Disfunktional Recordings.

Steve and Rob formed Disfunktional in 1996 and have since, seen releases from Junior Sanchez, Yousef, Richard Grey, Paul Woolford, Lottie, Mutiny, Kashmir, DJ Triple A and the mighty Danny Tenaglia and gorgieo moroders (from here to eternity) It wasn’t until 1996 and their remixes of Todd Terry’s Jumping’ and Plastic Dreams that it really took off for the Rhythm Masters. Their DJing took Steve and Rob all over the world and the UK, including regular sets at the likes of Ministry, Cream and Back 2 Basics. 1997 saw them win the coveted Music Week/Record Mirror Award as the Number 1 remix producers – securing their position as one of the top remix teams in the world. By the end of the 90’s they found themselves credited amongst the worlds top 5 remixers of the decade in Music Week - a testimony to their ability to consistently produce top quality material for the underground and above.

The beginning of 2002 saw an amicable split of the Rhythm Masters as they both decided to take a break and pursue solo projects – whilst still keeping their record label going together. Steve has since completed projects with Lottie, Mark Knight, Nic Fancuili, Mutiny, Joe Mills, Yousef, Paul Woolford and Pete Tong. In 2008 Steve has been working on his new label called ‘sMACk’ with the first release a track that he made with Pete Tong called ‘Serendipity’. He has five releases ready including tracks he did with Paul Woolford and Yousef. In Steve's own words he describes the label as his ‘Underground Offshoot’; “I’m well known for all the remixes I did last year such as Jamiroquai, Charlotte Church, Simply Red, etc but my label is raw dirty and filthy, the type of music I like to DJ with.”

Steve is also working on his solo album which is more of an electronic selection of music and which he describes as beautiful and very musical. This is a project that he also wants to take to the stage. DJing wise, Steve is a perfectionist and uses three decks, CD players, FX and a sampler in his live gigs – remixing every record live and ensuring he is more than a little different. Jim Mawsdley from Shindig, Newcastle said of Steve “To say I was impressed was an understatement when I first heard Steve spin. With the flow of his records that he put together seamlessly to his encouragement of the crowd, everything was larger than life. He truly rocks”. Yousef has cited Steve as “a technically gifted DJ with an ‘interesting’, twisted and funky sound.” His sets are unforgettable, his style energetic, and combining his musical taste and live shows, he is, above all, entertaining…

The album contains a variety of genres from different angles from house, to ghettotech and many other influences in between. As you listen you can see how far Aaron has come since his break through in 1996. Defnitely one to check out we say.

Macworld 2009 Apple Latest Producction Tools

Apple announced significant upgrades to several of their products, notably the iLife suite of media software, the more office-oriented iWork, and their high-end 17-inch MacBook Pro.

For DJs and producers, the highlights are GarageBand ‘09 and the new MacBook Pro.

When Apple revved the MacBooks and MacBook Pro last fall, the top-of-the-line 17-inch MacBook Pro was conspicuously overlooked, leading many industry insiders – Beatportal included – to presume that Apple had a major upgrade planned for this month’s Macworld.

The newest addition to the MacBook Pro series now featured the same design cues as its smaller siblings, including Apple’s new love-it-or-hate-it monolithic trackpad.

That’s all well and good, but the big news is its battery, which is both a massive improvement and a classically fascist step backward.

First, the good news – the new 17-inch MacBook Pro can operate for up to eight hours on a single charge.

That’s more than double what the previous model delivered.

Equally remarkable is the battery’s projected lifespan: Up to 1000 recharge cycles.

Most laptop batteries start to give out after 300 charge cycles, so this is an equally significant improvement.

And then the bad news…

Like the iPod, iPhone, and MacBook Air, the battery is non-removable – so when it finally does require replacement, our friends at Apple have their faithful users by the short-n-curlies.

GarageBand ‘09

Apple’s revisions to their entry-level DAW, GarageBand, are a mixed bag as well.

The ‘09 upgrade consists primarily of four new features.

Basic Lessons. For novice musicians, GarageBand now includes interactive, step-by-step lessons for both piano and guitar – complete with fingering for keyboard and fretboard, as well as notation.

Artist Lessons. Sold separately at five bucks a pop, GarageBand users can now learn the specifics of their favorite tracks from the artists themselves. Wanna learn ‘Roxanne’ by The Police? Sting will personally walk you through it.

3D Guitar Rigs. GarageBand now includes thirty new amp & stompbox setups that cover specific flavors like Brit Pop, Honky Tonk, Lowdown Blues, Seattle Sound, Stadium Solo, and Woodstock Fuzz. Frankly, we look forward to hearing these presets applied to instruments other than guitar, since this is EDM after all.

Magic GarageBand Jam. This is a cheesy, almost throwaway feature that allows you to “jam out” with a virtual band in a variety of styles. Think rock-band-meets-karaoke, but bland and unrecognizable.

GarageBand has always been a favorite of ours, because it’s free with every Mac and is shockingly powerful as it’s based on Apple’s ubiquitous Logic Pro software.

So, other than the goofy GarageBand Jam feature, there’s definitely some interesting stuff in this update.
